Northwest Wine Night TV Senior Producer
Grab your cozy socks, oversized sweaters, and infinity scarves, it’s time to talk fall wine! Maybe I’m biased because Fall is my favorite season, but there’s nothing better than wrapping up with a blanket on the couch with my Glassybabys lit, music in the background, a fall scent melting in the burner, and a good glass of wine that just makes you sink a little deeper in the cushions.
For me that wine is Novelty Hill 2014 Royal Slope Red Wine. In fact, I’m sipping it as I type, because well there’s no need to justify it. This wine is medium bodied and fruit forward with dark berries, black cherry, and just enough tannins. It offers a little bit of everything with 64% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Sangiovese, 1% Malbec Variety. Like a fall cornucopia in your mouth! A flavor that lingers like a fruit compote simmering on the stove top.
I asked some of our Northwest Wine Night TV panelists what they fill their glasses with for Fall.
Corwin Haeck said, “Many people would probably name a red wine for their fall comfort, but I prefer a white, especially for those autumn afternoons where the sun takes on a gorgeous golden hue. That’s when I might pour a glass of Pinot Gris. It’s more complex than the chardonnay I might reach for in the summer, a little creamy, and even spicy. Willamette Valley Vineyards makes a good Pinot Gris.”
Elisa Jaffe’s go-to fall wine is a Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir. She calls it, “A perfect blend of fruit and spice to ease into autumn. It’s appealing in color, compliments most cozy fall meals, and seems to please company whatever their red wine tastes might be. And the price is very reasonable.”
Scott Carty says, “I’ve yet to put my lips to a glass of the 2014 Dead Horse from Mark Ryan. I have to wait until it’s really Fall (and then some) when Mark delivers the goods, October 2nd. However, I’ve yet to look a Dead Horse in the eye and not be in love. The rich, jammy, inky goodness Mark bottles up is always a treat–especially fireside on a crisp Autumn afternoon, amidst long shadows, golden leaves and streaks of white smoke against a blue sky. It’s a big red that puts all the little things into perspective and reminds you of the good things in life.”
