You’ve probably heard of a “pub crawl” but are you familiar with the “Cab Sav Saunter”? That’s when you wander through Woodinville and taste some of the world’s best Cabernet Sauvignon. And there are few places better for a “Cab Sav Saunter” than in our Warehouse District. We have a Cabernet Sauvignon discovery itinerary that takes you to a trio of tasting rooms pouring beautiful examples of our state’s most popular grape.
Your afternoon starts with Gard Vintners, a friendly and inviting tasting room where you can taste their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon which is described as “an impressive, classic Cabernet Sauvignon” by the Wine Advocate. And if the nice folks at Gard have a bottle of their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Klasse Reserve open, you will definitely want to offer up a “pretty please” for a pour!
Once you’re done at Gard, head down the road to the main warehouse district and pop into Newsprint Wines, the “kid sister” of Guardian Cellars. (A fun fact about the winery names – Guardian Cellars was named in recognition of winemaker and owner Jerry Riener’s “other life” as a police officer. In that same spirit, Newsprint Wines was named to recognize the career of Jerry’s wife and Guardian co-owner, Jennifer Sullivan, who is a local news reporter.) Their 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic example of Red Mountain Cab – very full bodied with soft tannins, and under $30!
Next, stop next door at Barrage Cellars where you will be immediately drawn into the down-to-earth tasting room. Chances are good that winemaker and owner, Kevin Correll, will be there and is always happy to chat about all things wine. Kevin makes two Cabernet Sauvignons, one from Columbia Valley and one from Red Mountain. It’s a great way to taste two styles of Washington Cabernets side-by-side and appreciating the beauty of both.
