Located just 30 minutes northeast of Seattle, Woodinville Wine Country is home to more than 120 wineries and tasting rooms, along with restaurants, boutique hotels and experiences that go well beyond the wine glass.

For travel creator Portia Smith (@travelwithportia), it was the perfect place to celebrate her sister Kalah’s 40th birthday. Portia gathered the girls for a one-night getaway filled with fall activities, Washington wine and a little time away from the everyday.

Day One: Fall Adventures, Wine Tasting & a Birthday Celebration

Morning | A Taste of Fall

The day began at JB Family Growers, a family-owned farm known for its lavender fields in summer and its pumpkin patch and sunflower garden in fall. With a corn maze, seasonal activities, and plenty of autumn scenery, it’s a fun way to kick off a day in wine country.

From there, the group headed to Elm Candle Bar in Woodinville’s Harvest development. Here, guests can blend fragrances and pour their own custom candles, choosing from more than 40 scents. It’s a hands-on experience that gives everyone something to take home, beyond a few new photos.

Afternoon | Discover Washington Wine

With fall activities checked off the list, it was time to explore what Woodinville is best known for: Washington wine.

The first stop was Avennia, a winery inspired by the traditions of Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley. Its wines showcase fruit from some of Washington’s most respected vineyards, making it a wonderful introduction to the state’s winemaking.

Next came DeLille Cellars, a Woodinville institution founded in 1992. Known for its Bordeaux-style blends, DeLille helped put Washington red wines on the map. Today, visitors can enjoy tastings in its impressive multi-level space, once home to the Redhook Brewery.

Two wineries, two distinct experiences and plenty of good conversation along the way.

Late Afternoon | Settle In at Willows Lodge

After a full afternoon, the group checked into Willows Lodge, one of Woodinville’s most beloved places to stay.

Surrounded by gardens and towering trees, this 84-room boutique hotel brings a distinctly Pacific Northwest feel to a wine country getaway. Spacious rooms, fireplaces, soaking tubs and an on-site spa make it easy to settle in and enjoy a little downtime.

With wineries and restaurants nearby, it’s also a convenient home base for exploring Woodinville without venturing far.

Evening | A Speakeasy, Good Music & Dinner Together

Before dinner, the girls made one final wine stop at Darby Winery, founded by winemaker Darby English and known for its expressive Syrah and red blends.

But there’s more to Darby than great wine. Tucked inside is a speakeasy-style room with a record player, where you can put on a favorite vinyl, settle in with a glass of wine and enjoy the music. It’s a fun, intimate space with a personality all its own, and an especially good stop when you’re spending the evening with friends.

The night ended at Heritage Restaurant Bar, a neighborhood favorite in Woodinville’s Hollywood District.

Opened in 2018 by chef Breanna Beike and her husband Chris Brende, Heritage has built a following for its seasonal dishes, locally sourced ingredients and welcoming atmosphere.

For Portia and the girls, it was the perfect place to gather around the table and celebrate a milestone birthday.

Day Two: A Slow Morning in Wine Country

After a full day of exploring, there was no need to rush the next morning.

The group enjoyed breakfast in their room at Willows Lodge before packing up and heading home.

That’s one of the best things about a Woodinville getaway. You can fit so much into a single night away, yet still feel like you’ve had a chance to escape.

There’s a new neighborhood to explore in Woodinville Wine Country. Located in Woodinville’s Hollywood District, Harvest Woodinville brings together wine tasting, dining, shopping, overnight stays and residential living in a walkable setting. Looking for an occasion to explore? Harvest’s first annual Harvest Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 1–5 PM.

The free public event will include live music, a custom hat bar and family photos, with an official Woodinville Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at 3 PM. It’s an opportunity to see The Yard as more businesses begin welcoming visitors.

A new wine tasting experience is planned for Woodinville. Chateau Ste. Michelle plans to introduce a dedicated Trothe tasting salon in December 2026, expanding its luxury wine experiences and bringing visitors a new opportunity to discover wines from Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills.

The planned salon is part of a partnership announced September 29, 2026, between Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Andrews Family Vineyards. Under the agreement, Ste. Michelle will serve as the national sales agency and direct-to-consumer provider for Trothe and Sagebreaker. Both wine brands are sourced exclusively from the Andrews family’s vineyards in Horse Heaven Hills.

The partners are targeting a limited national release of Trothe and Sagebreaker in fall 2026. For those planning a Woodinville wine tasting visit, the Trothe salon is an addition to watch, with its opening tentatively scheduled for December.

Harvest brings a different kind of energy to Woodinville Wine Country. While the grapes are grown in vineyards east of the Cascades and throughout Washington, much of the winemaking happens right here.

As freshly picked fruit arrives in Woodinville, wineries shift into high gear. Crush pads fill with grape bins, cellar crews work around the clock, and the scent of fermenting juice drifts through the air. It is busy, unpredictable and one of the most exciting times to visit.


FROM VINEYARD TO WOODINVILLE

Harvest begins long before the grapes reach the winery. Growers and winemakers carefully track flavor, sugar, acidity and weather conditions to determine when each vineyard block is ready to be picked.

Once the decision is made, grapes are harvested and transported across the mountains to Woodinville. Every delivery marks the beginning of a new vintage and another chapter in Washington’s wine story.

EVERY GRAPE HAS ITS MOMENT

Not all grapes arrive at once. Fruit for sparkling wines is often picked first, followed by white varieties and then later-ripening reds.

As each shipment arrives, winery teams unload, sort and process the grapes before preparing them for fermentation. The pace continues for weeks, with schedules shaped by ripeness, weather and the arrival of the next truck.

Washington’s wine map just gained a new name. The Columbia Hills AVA, officially recognized in August 2026, is Washington’s 22nd American Viticultural Area.

An AVA is a federally recognized grape-growing region with distinctive geographic or climatic features. Think of it as a wine’s home address, helping you understand where the grapes were grown.

COLUMBIA HILLS AVA AT A GLANCE

Located in Klickitat County in south-central Washington, Columbia Hills sits within the larger Columbia Valley AVA, between the Columbia Gorge and The Burn of Columbia Valley.

The AVA:

Its south-facing slopes offer abundant sunlight, while the Columbia River helps moderate temperatures and extend the growing season. Shallow, well-drained soils bring vines closer to basalt bedrock, with sand, silt and gravel shaped by the ancient Missoula Floods.

What It Means for Woodinville

Many Woodinville wineries source grapes from regions across Washington, bringing the state’s wine map together in one tasting destination. As Columbia Hills begins appearing on wine labels, visitors may soon be able to discover Washington’s newest AVA right here in Woodinville.

Beginning September 16, 2026, eligible wineries can request approval to use Columbia Hills AVA on their labels. The next time you’re tasting in Woodinville, take a closer look at the bottle. You might spot Washington’s newest wine region.
